Spooky Seance Magic For Halloween

October is a busy time for entertainers and event planners. Magicians, specifically, are in high demand, but the question they often face is just how "adult" should their performances be. People want to be scared, shocked, disturbed, but often in a family friendly way, and so selecting the right material is key. Here are some performance options that The Cosmic Romantics have learned work well, through their own alchemy of trial and error, making adjustments to their material to make it perfectly enchanting fun for all occasions. (And don't forget to book your holiday entertainment far enough in advance!)

Witchy Magic For All Ages

Elizabeth Messick often performs strolling magic at holiday events, combining her magnificent close up illusions with her eye for dark fashion. Eric Thirstin usually dresses in a more classic suit and tie, or sometimes as a bellhop when they conduct their full seance show (which is silly, spooky, and RARELY opens any real gates to the spirit realm). At Labrynth of Jareth in 2023 they even dressed as "Thurston and the Devil," a throwback to old magic posters of Kellar, Thurston, Harry Blackstone Sr., and the myriad other magicians who have advertised themselves with the iconic imps. Costuming makes all the difference, and can be tailored to any events special needs.

Mind Blowing Mentalism

Mentalism is a branch of magic involving mind reading and subtle misdirections and manipulations... Don't worry, it's not as scary as it sounds. Elizabeth and Eric have crafted a beautiful routine around Elizabeth's "second sight" abilities. Essentially, she can be blindfolded and yet name random items held up by a series of audience members. The beautiful thing about this magical routine is that it plays for all ages. For a purely adult show, the mind reading holds an air of mystery and is a truly fooling experience for even the most analytical adults. On the other hand, children completely understand the magic as well, and are eager to hold up objects themselves to be a part of the show. Sometimes, the revelations are accompanied by a song played skillfully on the ukulele, to give you a sense of just how thoughtful The Cosmic Romantics can be with their material. Every situation calls for a specific type of performance, and putting in the extra work to hit that niche makes all the difference.

On-Location Seance Magic Show

While it doesn't take itself too seriously, The Cosmic Romantics have also created a half hour seance experience, where the story itself weaves itself into the location of the performance. During October of 2023 they had a residency at the enchanting Petit Hermitage in West Hollywood, crafting a story around an opera singer who performed there a 100 years prior. That same season, they performed at a private party in the Hollywood Hills, presenting a similar story but one that weaved together the mansion's history and its former owners.

As you look for fun spooky Halloween magic or classy corporate magic for the holidays, remember that the performance should be as unique as your audience. Happy event planning!

Cosmically,

Eric Thirstin & Elizabeth Messick
